The Tree of Life

For those who feel the need to approach the Creator,
to try to pene- trate his immensity, religion provides
a variety of means among which are prayer, the attendance
at religious rites, and obedience to certain rules. These
means are good but they are insufficient. If you want to
come closer to God, it is not enough to experience mystical
emotions and abide by certain rules: you also need the
rofound understanding of the universe which only a systematic
explanation can give you. And the Sephirotic Tree of the
Cabbalists is just such a system.

The Sephirotic Tree is a sacred figure, and you must approach
it with great respect and humility. It is not enough to hang
it on your wall and read it two or three times to memorize the names
and be able to use them every now and then in your conversations.
if it is to become the foundation of some genuine spiritual
work, the Sephirotic Tree must be a permanent subject of
meditation. Try gradually to assimilate and digest these
notions; in this way you will be lighting lamps within you,
and those lamps will not only illuminate you, but will also
purify and strengthen you; they will also make you more
beautiful, more alive.

The visual symbol of the Sephirotic Tree is extremely simple,
but the contents are inexhaustible. It is a key capable of opening
all the mysteries of the universe to you.

If you work with the Tree for years, if you study it and
taste its fruits, you will be assimilating the very equilibrium
and harmony of cosmic Life.
